Woodside

The backyard of this recently built Woodside, California residence was designed with an emphasis on creating a family-oriented retreat that combines relaxation with entertainment. The challenge was to create a site programmed for different experiences within a cozier space.

The heart of the backyard showcases a central fountain complete with custom scuppers which punctuates the unifying element of the area, a built-in bench running the length of the whole yard. The fountain plays a dual role as an organizing element, delineating the outdoor dining and fireside seating areas, and a captivating focal point when viewed from the house and adjacent spa. Adjacently, the outdoor lounge complete with a fire pit is nestled beside the party pavilion, crafting an authentic indoor-outdoor experience that amplifies the perception of spaciousness within the interior.

Complementing the outdoor ambiance, a spacious built-in spa is integrated into a beautifully designed wood deck. The deck incorporates a rolling wood cover for the spa when not in use, optimizing the deck's versatility and functionality. Conveniently located by the kitchen, the outdoor BBQ area features a walk-up bar window, allowing for the service of food & drink, and promoting interactions with the chef. To add a touch of charm, festive string lights illuminate the outdoor cooking area, casting a soft and cheerful ambiance.

The overarching vision for this verdant entertainment haven was to imbue it with vitality and delight. To bring this vision to life, an intriguing blend of low-water plant species and succulents were used. The result is an environment that accommodates many functions while maintaining a serene tranquility. Striking a harmonious balance between the spaces designated for gatherings and those reserved for greenery was paramount to ensuring an environment that felt both expansive and verdant.

Upon completion, the backyard became a space where homeowners could enjoy outdoor dining, gathering around the fire pit, relaxing in the spa, cooking, or simply unwinding on the deck, all connected through the use of the central fountain.
